PV Module with More Efficiency

100 minus 80 is 20. What does this simple arithmetic have to do with solar energy? Quite a lot! Until now, 80% of solar energy is lost if a monocrystalline PV module generates electric current, and only 20% is used. But in the near future, a special nano-coating will change all this, reports J.v.G. technology GmbH.

No farmer would be satisfied with just 20% of their harvest. Hans Thoma, General Manager of the solar specialist company J.v.G. technology GmbH, feels the same way, and thus has assigned a task to the company’s in-house research team. Now, the experts assisting their manager Dr. Claudia Gemmel are about to see a breakthrough. “By means of a special nano-coating we succeeded in significantly increasing the so-called ‘light harvesting,’ and consequently the efficiency factor,” says Claudia Gemmel.

In partnership with a German start-up enterprise, J.v.G. technology GmbH has conducted the initial simulations, which indicate that the cell performance can be increased by employing the nano-technology effectively by 20% – in relative terms. What does that mean concretely? A cell with a 20% efficiency factor would have an efficiency factor of 24% as a result.

This enhancement of efficiency has since been confirmed experimentally as well. “These four percent are just the beginning for us,” Hans Thoma points out. And this still isn’t a reason for him to lay back on the laurels he would probably receive. After all, 100 minus 76 is only 24.
